Getting Back Into It

I'll admit, I haven't done a lot of voice work. The 'highlight' of my work so far has been the one audiobook I've narrated and a few warm-ups (again, I'll get into the audiobook in the future). But, now that my wife and I have discussed more in depth the roadmap to getting this work to be something more substantial, I'd like to really work on getting more into it. To accomplish this, what I'd like to do is really measure my abilities and get feedback so I can get even better before I start accepting commissions for anything. So what does this mean? It means that I need some suggestions for scripts/passages/stories, etc. to read. I need them to be of varying lengths and genres to gauge how long it takes me to record and edit them as well as to see how I perform with each one. Once I have this figured out my wife has offered to crunch some numbers for me and help me better understand the true time commitment expected for each eventual commission. Better that she handles the numbers, too, because my brain just instantly shuts off the moment it knows math will be involved. As an aside, I've been thinking about (re)starting a soundcloud account to keep track of my recordings and such. I've seen other voice actors do it and it seems to work out well enough for them. I don't really have any other reliable or semi professional place to put them. I've uploaded some to tumblr but that's hardly professional and YouTube doesn't seem to make sense for it really. So perhaps soundcloud would be the best option. Can I then post those soundcloud links here? I'll have to look into that. This site is still pretty new to me, as is most of this entire process. Oh well, that's what learning is for! Anyone who wants to be good at what they do is always learning. -Josh
